## What does it do?

A UPS keeps the load running from its batteries when mains power fails or the voltage is disturbed. The Vertiv Liebert GXT RT+ (1,000–3,000 VA) and GXT5-5000 (5,000 VA) are online double-conversion UPS units: input power is converted to DC and then back to a clean sine-wave AC. Even in normal operation the PBX, servers and switches run from this conditioned output rather than directly from the mains.

Runtime is set in two ways: the UPS's internal batteries and, where needed, external battery cabinets (EBC). With internal batteries the GXT RT+ gives about 3 minutes at full load and 9–10.5 minutes at 50% load; the GXT5-5000 gives 7 minutes at full load and 18.5 minutes at 50%. Each model has its own battery cabinet for longer runtimes.

In -48 V DC systems at telecom sites the batteries connect directly to the DC bus; here we use Exide GNB Sprinter P/XP 12 V VRLA AGM block batteries (P12V875 41 Ah, XP12V1800 56.4 Ah). The same batteries are also used in UPS battery strings. The UPS units are monitored over SNMP and web through a network card; Vertiv Power Insight software can shut servers down automatically during a long outage.

## Which scenario does it fit?

- **OpenScape Business / OpenScape 4000 PBX room:** GXT RT+ 2000–3000 VA or GXT5-5000 for AC-powered PBX hardware, network switches and the PoE switches feeding IP phones / DECT base stations. If a longer runtime is needed, an external battery cabinet is added.
- **Server-room rack:** Rack-mounted GXT5-5000 for servers, storage and core switches: 5,000 VA / 5,000 W, hardwired input, 2 × C19 and 6 × C13 outputs. Orderly shutdown of virtual servers with Power Insight.
- **Branch cabinet:** GXT RT+ 1000–1500 VA, 86 mm high, for the branch switch, router and small PBX. Installed in a rack or as a tower; monitored over USB/RS232 or an SNMP card.
- **Telecom site DC system batteries:** Exide Sprinter P12V875 or XP12V1800 in strings of 4 × 12 V blocks for Eltek -48 V DC power systems. The number of blocks and strings is calculated from the discharge table according to the load and the required runtime.

## Key features

- Online double conversion: the load is fed continuously from a conditioned pure sine-wave output (GXT RT+ and GXT5)
- Output power factor 0.9 on the GXT RT+ and 1.0 on the GXT5: 3,000 VA = 2,700 W, 5,000 VA = 5,000 W
- Rack / tower: the same unit installs either way; a 4-post rack kit and tower feet come in the box
- Runtime extension: a dedicated external battery cabinet (EBC) for each GXT RT+ model; up to 10 cabinets can be connected to the GXT5 and are detected automatically, and a single cabinet raises full-load runtime from 7 to 19 minutes
- Battery management: user-replaceable hot-swap batteries; on the GXT5 temperature-compensated charging, programmable automatic battery self-test, battery health status and replacement date prediction

The U value is given from the unit height and the model code (…RT2U / …RT5U). Exact runtime is confirmed in the BOM with the actual load and number of battery cabinets.

## Expansion and maintenance scenarios

### Extending runtime later

An external battery cabinet is added without replacing the UPS: GXTRT-EBC24V / 36V / 48V / 72V depending on the GXT RT+ model, and GXT5-EBC192VRT3U for the GXT5-5000. With one cabinet the GXT5 reaches 19 minutes at full load and 48 minutes at 50%; it detects the cabinets automatically and calculates the remaining runtime accordingly.

### UPS maintenance without dropping the load

The Liebert MicroPOD maintenance bypass for the GXT RT+ (1000–2000 VA: MP2-210K, 3000 VA: MP2-220L) and the integrated maintenance bypass POD on the GXT5 5–10 kVA allow the UPS to be removed without powering down the connected equipment.

### Battery replacement

UPS batteries are replaced with a per-model battery kit (GXTRT-24BATKIT … GXTRT-72BATKIT, GXT5-192VBATKIT). The GXT5 predicts battery health and replacement date; in DC systems, battery replacement is planned from periodic measurements and discharge tests.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a UPS last, and how is runtime calculated?

Runtime depends on the load in watts and the amount of battery. According to Vertiv's tables the GXT RT+ gives 3.1–3.3 minutes at 100% load and 9–10.5 minutes at 50% on internal batteries; the GXT5-5000 gives 7 minutes at 100% and 18.5 minutes at 50%. For DC battery strings we use Exide's constant-power discharge table: for example, the P12V875 delivers 301 W per block for 1 hour to a 1.80 V/C end voltage. We take the total wattage from your load list and calculate the battery quantity for the target runtime.

### Why an online double-conversion UPS?

In an online double-conversion UPS the input power is converted to DC and then back to AC; even in normal operation the load is fed from a conditioned sine-wave output rather than directly from the mains. The GXT RT+ operates over a wide 120–300 VAC input range (with power derating under certain conditions, per Vertiv). That is why we prefer the online topology for PBXs, servers and network equipment.

### How long do the batteries last, and when are they replaced?

Exide Sprinter P/XP batteries have a "Long Life 10–12 years" design life under the EUROBAT 2015 classification; this is a design class, and actual life depends on temperature, charging and discharge conditions. Datasheet values are given for 25 °C and the float voltage varies with temperature, so charging must be temperature-compensated (the GXT5 does this). We base replacement decisions on measurements and discharge tests; the GXT5 also predicts the battery replacement date.

### How is runtime extended with an external battery cabinet?

Each GXT RT+ model has its own cabinet (GXTRT-EBC24VRT2U … EBC72VRT2U). Up to 10 GXT5-EBC192VRT3U cabinets can be connected to the GXT5-5000; a single cabinet raises runtime from 7 to 19 minutes at full load and from 18.5 to 48 minutes at 50% load. The GXT5 detects the cabinets automatically and reports the remaining runtime correctly.

### Can the UPS be monitored remotely and shut servers down automatically?

Yes. The GXT RT+ uses a network card with SNMP and web access (LI38000B020), the GXT5 an IntelliSlot RDU120 card; both also support relay/dry contacts and USB/serial connections. Vertiv Power Insight is free, monitors up to 100 devices and offers automated server shutdown plus a vCenter, vXRail and Nutanix plugin. We can also forward the alarms to your existing SNMP monitoring system.

### How is a UPS sized for a PBX — VA or W?

Sizing is based on the load's wattage (W); a UPS's W rating is VA × power factor. The GXT RT+ 3,000 VA delivers 2,700 W, while the GXT5-5000 delivers 5,000 W at a 1.0 power factor. We add a margin to the total wattage of the PBX, switches and servers; the short-term overload limit on the GXT RT+ is 130% for 30 seconds and 150% for 3 seconds.
